Andrew Robinson delivered a birdie-laden and bogey-free round at Gog Magog Golf Club to qualify for the final of the PGA Professional Championship and leave his opponents battling for second place.
Robinson, who is attached to Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club in Suffolk, put the course on the cusp of Cambridge to the sword in the PGA East region’s qualifier for the final at Hunstanton in the third week of June.
The 33-year-old served notice of his intentions with four birdies in the first five holes en route to reaching the turn in five-under.
His negotiation of the back nine was tame by comparison – three more birdies resulting in an eight-under-par round of 64 to win the event by four shots and claim the £500 first prize.
More importantly it has earned Robinson a chance to compete in the final of the Titleist and FootJoy-sponsored competition which carries a £78,000 prize purse with £10,000 going to the winner.
And he will do so on a course that suits his game and with which he is familiar.
“I enjoy links golf and, coincidentally, played in an event Hunstanton last week,” said Robinson, who will be making his debut in the final.
“I really liked the course and played well but not as well as today. I hit 17 greens in regulation and didn’t hit a bad shot all day. My previous best round was seven-under so this is the best of my career.”
Robinson will be joined in the final by 17 other qualifiers from the event at Gog Magog, a number that includes Burstead Golf Club’s Thomas Wiskin and Jack Yetton who is attached to the tournament sponsor’s parent company, Acushnet Europe. They qualified by prevailing in a five-man play-off after posting level par rounds of 72.
The other 14 qualifiers are: David Salisbury (Three Rivers Golf & Country Club), Chase Davis (Eaton Golf Club), Mark Talbott (Thorpe Hall Golf Club), Craig Housden (Little Channels), Mark Spooner (Glen Lodge Golf Club), James Ruebotham (Welwyn Garden City Golf Club), Michael Vandenberg (Rochford Hundred Golf Club), Andrew Pestell (Chelmsford Golf Club), Matthew Cousens (Grims Dyke Golf Club), Andrew George (Ely City Golf Club), Steven Hambling (Braintree Golf Club), Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs), Neil Mitchell (Ipswich Golf Centre), James Jankowski (JJ Golf), Adam Pike (Brampton Park), and Andy Shakespear (Warren Golf Club).
