Accountant makes his performance count in booking a place in Turkey final

A Manchester accountant, who has been playing golf for less than two years, is heading to Turkey for the PGA National Pro-Am Championship final.

Lewie Wilson teamed up with Davenport Golf Club professional Jamie Howarth to win the qualifying event at nearby Stockport Golf Club.

The pair dominated the Stableford format event to collect 49 points and finish ahead of Denbigh Golf Club’s Ben Brierley and Trefor Jones.

Wilson and Howarth will now take their place in the £25,000 grand final at Antalya Golf Club, Turkey (above), in November.

Wilson, who plays off 14, says he played his best golf ever as Howarth led the way ahead of his qualifying event for the Open 24 hours later.

However, the 28-year-old was not aware of the full extent of the rewards for booking their place in the final.

“I knew the prize for the winners,” he said, “but I didn’t realise everything else that came with it, the full package of going to Turkey to the final.

“Jamie also had his focus on Open qualifying so it was a busy few days for him.

“I think that was probably my best ever personal round and Jamie got close to the course record. I hadn’t played at Stockport before.”

Wilson says he is relatively new to the game after deciding to take it up when he completed his accountancy exams before taking up a job in Manchester.

“This is only my second year of playing golf,” he said.

“But I was always going to take up the game, I was losing interest in playing football. A couple of years ago I qualified from my accountancy exams, and I got lessons from Jamie at Davenport.

“I started playing off 21 and I’m hoping to get my handicap down to 10 by the end of the year. So, I’m improving.”
