Beckett’s double

29/04/2013

Barnham Broom PGA assistant professional Alex Beckett won the individual prize at the West Middlesex Golf Club pro-am with a round of one under par 68.

He had five birdies, four of them on his last five holes, on a day of sunshine and showers.

“My round began on the fourth with a shotgun start. My driving was not good but I did not panic and then everything clicked,” said Beckett whose next event will be the Powerade PGA Assistants’ Championship qualifier at Chigwell on Wednesday.

Joint runners-up on level par were Crue Elliott (Sandy Lodge), Neil Mitchell (Bury Golf Range) and Murray White (Penfold Park).

Robert Leonard of Harpenden Common was fifth at one over par and Ben Cooper (Bishop’s Stortford) sixth at two over.

There were two eagles on the day both at par five holes and both from Stuart Brown (Orton Meadows) who ended with four over par 73.

Beckett brought home the winning team of Jon Baker-Odlin, a former Norfolk county captain, with Berkhamsted members Alex Nelson and Geoff Brown by three shots with 16 under par 122.

Runners-up were Elliott, with West Middlesex club captain Mick McCormack, and host club members Mark Geraghty and Paul Maunder. Daniel Coughlan (Wyke Green) and his team were third a further three shots behind.
