Brittain steps up to the plate at Little Aston

A Shropshire professional, who used last year’s lockdown to market his own golf training aid, finished joint top of the leaderboard at the PGA Professional Championship Midlands qualifying round at Little Aston.

Jamie Brittain (above), representing Theswingplate.com, carded a two-under-par round at the Sutton Coldfield venue, along with former PGA Cup team member Lee Clarke, of Woolaton Park Golf Club.

They finished two shots ahead of Leicestershire’s Craig Shave (Whetstone Golf Club); Keith Preece (Kington Golf Club); Michael Campbell (Kettering Golf Club); and Matthew Jacques (South Staffs Golf Club).

They will join 10 other qualifiers from the Little Aston event in the £69,500 final to be held at Blairgowrie Golf Club in Scotland between June 15-18.

Brittain, who has already qualified for this year’s PGA Play-offs due to his performances in the Midlands Order of Merit, was not sure if he was ready to impress this early in the year, but he and Clarke were the only players to post sub-par scores.

“I felt good but I hadn’t played a competitive round this year, so I didn’t know what to expect,” said Brittain who, in addition to promoting his Swing Plate training aid, teaches at Wrekin Golf Club and Three Hammers Golf Complex, Wolverhampton.

“Last year, I played a handful of regional events and pro-ams but I used it to go in a slightly different direction away from the course.

“I’d have accepted playing a few bad shots at Little Aston after being out of action for so long, but I surprised myself. I missed a few putts coming in but it levelled out in the end.”

Brittain will be making his first appearance in the final of the Association’s flagship tournament following his successful completion of the PGA’s training programme.
