The PGA (Midlands) Coventry pro-am proved to be a fitting occasion to mark the conclusion of Dr Phil Weaver's 35 year association with the club as their head professional.

A calm day saw 24 teams take on the Open qualifying venue with scoring on the low side and a winner that everyone would have predicted before tee off as Matthew Cort returned to the scene of his 2013 PGA Assistants Championship triumph in style.

Cort (Rothley Park) shot an eagle and five birdies in a commanding round of 67 for a two-shot victory over David Fulcher (Edgbaston), whose four birdies during his outward half helped him to a blemish free 69 for solo second place.

Just one shot behind in joint third were Luke Towler (Telford) and Craig Shave (Whetstone). In the team event Christopher Evans (Wishaw) steered his guests to a three shot win over the rest of the field.

As for the day itself, Weaver who officially retired on May 31st was delighted at how it all went.

“The weather was kind and everybody thoroughly enjoyed it, it was great for the club to host one and the likelihood is we'll run another pro-am next year,” he said.

Weaver, who will still be contributing to the club in his role on the environmental committee also enjoyed a special opening ceremony with The PGA and Coventry planting a special tree in his honour followed by tributes from Sandy Jones, Tim Rouse, and PGA (Midlands) chairman Craig Phillips.
