John Dwyer is hoping another strong display at the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship will earn him a fourth appearance for the Great Britain and Ireland PGA Cup team later this summer.

The Ashbourne Golf Club head professional from County Meath, who finished joint fifth last year, is among the 156-strong field competing in the £78,000 showpiece at De Vere Slaley Hall in Northumberland from June 11-14.

The Peugeot-supported final will also decide who makes the GB&I PGA Cup team to face the United States, also at Slaley Hall in September, giving Dwyer the opportunity to add to his appearances in 2000, 2003 and 2007.

“I’ve played in three PGA Cup teams but this is the first time I’ve gone into a selection year with points already in the bag,” said who won the PGA Professional Championship in 2007.

“But realistically there are probably only five places to go for, so I need to do well again.

“I’ve made a bit of a slow start this year but I’ll make sure I get over to Slaley Hall good and early to prepare for the final.”

He added: “It’s going to be two tournaments in one as far as I’m concerned.

“Obviously the first aim is to do well in the Glenmuir final and then see where that leaves you for the PGA Cup - that’s always at the back of your mind so you have to focus.”

Other players taking part at Slaley Hall include the 2010 champion David Mortimer (Galway Golf Club), David Foley (Dromoland Castle), William Noble (County Cavan and Ian St John (Carrick-on-Suir).
