Eagle sends Bond soaring

Former European Tour player Liam Bond (Marriott St Pierre) made an ideal start to a near-perfect round on his way to a first success of the year at Radyr.

He drove the 300-yard first hole and sunk the putt for an opening eagle.

Although he dropped his only shot at long par-four fifth hole he came home on three-under-par with birdies at the 11th, 14th and 17th for a four-under return of 65 to beat promising North Wilts assistant Barrie Forster by one shot.

The Wiltshireman birdied the first and picked up further shots at the 10th, 13th and 17th, dropping one at the 12th.

Bond, who won five times last season and was fifth in the Race to Woodbury Park after claiming the Cumberwell Park Players’ Championship, starts his order of merit challenge in the Total Triumph Classic at Oake Manor this week.

Experienced Welshman Sion Bebb (Vale Hotel) and Stuart Manley (Celtic Manor) with Filton club professional Daryl Kelley finished a shot further back. Kelley and Manley each bogeyed the last hole in the event sponsored by CIA Insurance.

Former Wells, Wheathill and Mendip pro John Goymer joined PGA West chairman James Lee (Caerphilly) on 69. Goymer also led the winning BPU Accountants team of Nick Tye, Nick Stork, Richard Williams into first place in the team section on 83 points.

They were one ahead of SAS Builders headed by Rhys Morgan (Machynys Peninsula) with Steve Sprudd, Drew Harper, Peter Williams. Radyr Golf Club members James Millard, Andrew Gould, Simon Marchant claimed third on countback, backed by Richard Brookman (Creigiau).
