Celtic Manor’s Joe Ferguson celebrated the honour of being named the region’s TGI assistant of the year by winning the latest South Wales PGA medal at Newport.

Ferguson won by two shots after carding a two-under-par round of 70, 24 hours after claiming his prize at the region’s Woodbury Park headquarters. Three birdies on each side also earned the birdie sweep. He sneaked ahead of the field by picking up shots at the final two holes.

James Lee (Caerphilly) with five birdies posted 72 to share second place with Rhys Davies (Cardiff) and Richard Brookman (Creigiau). Radyr’s Alex Gardner was the leading assistant on 73 just ahead of Christian Crane (Cardiff Golf Centre) and Chris O’Neill (Valleys Golf, Rhondda).

Lee retained his lead in the Order of Merit. The leading three players will represent South Wales in the county championship.
