Four players shared top place on a sunny but windy day in the latest Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal when thirty players failed to break par at Bristol and Clifton Golf Club.

Shane Kaye (Burnham and Berrow), Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre), Ed Goodwin (Cirencester) and David Dixon (Enmore Park) returned one over par 71 as a few devilish pin positions also contributed to the higher scoring.

Kaye was the first to post the winning score with a fast finish. Five bogeys and a solitary birdie at the ninth over the opening 13 holes were followed by three birdies at the 14th, 15th and 18th.

Stroke play and Match play champion Licata (above) holed some lengthy putts during his round, notably at the second and ninth for birdies. But he failed to gain a shot at the par five closing hole while seeking an outright win.

Goodwin is never far away from the leaders and he made birdies at the fifth and 18th after dropping shots first, 12th and 15th. Dixon also missed a birdie opportunity at the final hole.

Licata takes over as the new leader in the Total Triumph Order of Merit from the absent David Haines. He now holds a comfortable lead over Kaye with OOM champion Goodwin third.

Paul Deeprose (Halstock Driving Range) was fifth on 72. A PGA qualified referee he has officiated at many events this year but still gets his clubs out regularly in the county medals. He won the Over 40’s sweep.
