How did you get started with the Excel programme?
Seeing other professionals getting accredited each year really set me on my way. I’ve always looked for ways to stand out. I suppose I’m fortunate that there aren’t many putting coaches out there, but even so, you still have to go above and beyond.
The process itself is rewarding. You provide the evidence of your development, and there’s a real sense of achievement when you’re recognised for it.
There are also fantastic learning opportunities within the system. Whether you’re a manager, club pro, or in another role, there’s so much to help you grow and get more out of yourself.
Why did you decide to specialise in putting?
It’s something I was always good at as a kid, and I’ve always had a genuine interest in it. In 2019, I decided to go deeper—bought some kit, and then lockdown hit. That gave me the time and space to really get stuck in. I went all-in and put every spare bit of money and time into learning, and connected with as many top coaches as I could.
That’s something anyone can do—and it’s something the Excel system supports. I’d already done a lot of learning off my own bat, and now systems like Capto are integrated with Excel, so that work can count towards your accreditation.
Even things like listening to podcasts or reading books—those count too, because you’re learning. If you’ve got a gap in your day, use that time to explore something new or watch other coaches. There’s so much great information online now—everything’s accessible.
In 2023, for example, I took a putting biomechanics course with Dr Paul Hurrion, creator of the Quintic Ball Roll. It’s rare to get that kind of access, but through Excel, I spent a full day learning from him and asking questions I’d never have had the chance to otherwise.
