Great Scott – PGA Trainee gets to the point at Polzeath

Bradley Scott left some experienced challengers in his slipstream to record the biggest win of his short career at The Point at Polzeath and set the pace in the PGA South West’s Order of Merit.

Scott (above), a year two PGA Trainee, posted a bogey-free eight under par round of 64 to claim the £1,400 first prize on offer in the event sponsored by the host venue and Total Triumph.

In doing so, the 22-year-old, who is attached to Oake Manor Golf Club in Somerset, finished two shots clear of the field that included Richard O’Hanlon and Ashley Mansell.

O’Hanlon, winner of the 2017 Farmfoods British Par 3 Championships, finished tied third with Jacob Hunter three shots behind Scott in third place; Mansell, the region’s Order of Merit winner in 2019, was second two shots adrift of the winner.

In addition to overcoming such strong opposition Scott had to cope with the worst of the conditions caused by heavy overnight rain that delayed the start by two hours.

Not that the wet course made playable by the sterling efforts of the Point at Polzeath greenkeeping team troubled him as he served early notice of what was to follow.

Scott (above) opened up with three birdies in the first four holes and was five-under at the turn; by comparison his back nine was relatively low-key, featuring three birdies.

Reflecting on his round, he said: “I had a good start and carried on from there. I hit some really nice iron shoots and my putting was good I felt really comfortable out there.

“I’ve played the course twice before. That was last year and there were a couple of holes I wasn’t too sure about. I just committed to the swing and it worked out pretty well.”

Thus far, so has Scott’s season: as well as winning what was only his fourth appearance in an Order of Merit event, he finished tied first in the regional qualifier for the Coca Cola PGA Assistants’ Championship and has booked his place in the final of the English PGA Championship.
