Home sweet home for Curtis

Scott Curtis capitalised on local knowledge to keep a strong field including Staysure Tour Order of Merit leader Phillip Price at bay and win the Newport Medal.

Curtis, a PGA Assistant at Newport Golf Club who turned pro in 2016, began the front and back nines inauspiciously.

The 27-year-old bogeyed the first and 10th holes but recovered in fine style. He followed up with four birdies before the turn and another quartet on the way home for a six-under-par total of 66.

That saw him finish two shots clear of Order of Merit leader, Neath Golf Club’s Craig Melding whose four-under-par round of 68 was bogey-free.

Price, who was warming up for the final Staysure Tour event of the season, was a shot further back on three-under, one clear of Glynn Abbey Golf Club’s Martin Stimson and James Frazer of Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club.

Meanwhile Curtis and his amateur partner, Neil Evans, had to settle for second place in the team event. They finished on 47 points, one behind Cardiff Golf Club’s Chris O’Neill and Jamie Saunders.
