Jason Levermore (Channels Golf Club) birdied the final two holes to secure a share of the spoils at the Wanstead Golf Club Pro-Am.

The Essex pro finished with two threes to force a tie at the top with Mark Talbott (Thorpe Hall) and Graham Stone (Toot Hill).

Talbott, in the second group out, also signed off with a birdie at the last to set the early pace with a three-under-par 66.

That score was matched by Graham Stone who enjoyed a thrilling round of golf that included six birdies and an eagle.

Stone, whose playing appearances have been limited in recent times due to a back injury, holed out from around 180 yards with a seven-iron from the rough.

He said: “I was down the right with no clear shot to the green. So, I punched it out from under the trees and it ran up onto the green and popped in the hole. It was very Phil Mickelson-like!”

Stone then went on an amazing run of four straight birdies from the 11th and ended up in front alongside Talbott. He added: “I managed to get it going and putted well.”

Levermore’s chances of joining them looked in doubt after he slipped to one-under with a bogey at the short 15th. But the three-time Order of Merit crown winner served up a classy finish to make it a three-way tie alongside Talbott and Stone.

James Gurry (Basildon) was in charge of the winning team whose total of 125 was two better than the next best, led by Charlie Luther (Hertfordshire G&CC).
