Levermore in winner’s circle

Jason Levermore of Channels Golf Club produced a stunning round of 63 to cruise to victory in the Hendon Pro-Am.

Levermore holed out from 105 yards for an eagle as well as bagging seven birdies to finish at seven-under-par, five shots clear of the joint runners-up Christopher Cutchie (Colchester) and Paul Hetherington (Great Hadham G&CC).

It was a superb round and signalled a return to top form for the Essex pro, who fired a 76 just days earlier in the Mill Green Pro-Am.

Levermore said: “I hit it horrendously at Mill Green and didn’t really do anything right. So, I got to Hendon a couple of hours early and hit balls.

“I just thought, ‘let’s try and get it round under par and get back on track a little bit’. It seemed to work out quite nicely.”

After a dropped shot at the second, Levermore responded in fine fashion. He birdied the next and then sunk a sizzling wedge from just over 100 yards at the fourth.

With his tail up, he strung together three straight birdies around the turn, almost recording another eagle when an eight-iron rolled six inches behind the cup.

There was no stopping Levermore down the stretch as he made three putts from around 10 feet for successive birdies from the 14th.

It was sizzling stuff and leaves Levermore in a positive frame of mind ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth where last year he played all four rounds and aced the second hole on day one.

He said: “I wanted to steady the ship a little bit before Wentworth and I hit it lovely and putted lovely. It’s definitely nice to get that first win of the season under my belt.”

Rob Leonard (Harpenden Common) skippered the winning team, who finished at 11-under.
