Licata gallops to victory at Cleeve Hill

14/11/2019

Giuseppe Licata delivered a Thoroughbred finish on the course that overlooks Cheltenham racecourse to claim his second Total Triumph Order of Merit win of the season.

Having reached the turn at Cleeve Hill seemingly out of the running on one-over-par, the PGA West Region captain enjoyed a birdie bonanza on the back nine.

He made immediate amends for another bogey on the 10th with a birdie on the 11th and then followed up with four more on the remaining seven holes.

All of which resulted in the head PGA pro at Filton Golf Club posting a three-under-par round of 68 to finish a shot clear of former Cleeve Hill assistant Matt Evans.

Evans, who has moved across town to Lilley Brook Golf Club, was well-placed to claim outright victory or a share of it until he stumbled at the par-three 15th.

Similarly, three of the quartet that finished tied-third on one-under: Burnham & Berrow’s Lee Corfield, Roy Baker of Worlebury Golf Club and Cirencester Golf Club’s Ed Goodwin all dropped shots on the finishing straight.

Clevedon Golf Club’s Ashley Mansell, winner of the two previous events, was the exception with a birdie at the 18th.

Corfield, however, extended his lead at the head of the Total Triumph Order of Merit. He is now almost 30 points clear of Licata who has climbed above Ross Langdon of Brickhampton Court.
