“I’m very happy as it’s not easy holding the lead after every round,” said Maclean, who joins a decorated roll of honour that includes former Ryder Cup player Norman Wood, DP World Tour winner Alastair Forsyth and the 1999 Open champion, Paul Lawrie.
“This is a nice one to have on my cv and hopefully there are a few more titles to come.”
Maclean came into the assistants’ showpiece on the back of two second place finishes on the Arnold Clark Tartan Tour at the Hilton Park Order of Merit Challenge and the Hayston Pro-Am at his home club.
His opening 66 set the early standard and he fortified his position of authority over the course of the next 36-holes.
Four ahead going into the final round, Maclean, who shared top spot in last season’s Kerr Investments OOM event and the Highland Golf Links Pro-Am, extended his lead to eight at one stage as he enjoyed a procession to a coronation.
“It was funny as one of the guys at my club must have misread the leaderboard and put out a message that I’d won,” he said of this premature celebration.
“All of a sudden, my phone was exploding with everyone saying, ‘congratulations’. I still had 10 holes to play!”
Sundborg closed with final day rounds of 69 and 68 to claim the runners-up spot on nine-under while Alex Chalk and Nathan McCann shared third on seven-under.
