Mansell's smash and grab

07/11/2019

PGA West Order of Merit winner Ashley Mansell claimed his second Gloucester & Somerset Winter Medal victory of the season thanks to a birdie-laden back nine at The Kendleshire.

The Clevedon pro, who won three of the region’s four Order of Merit events, was level at the turn after erasing a dropped shot at the long par-four seventh with a birdie at the par-three ninth.

He followed up by negotiating the final nine holes in 31 shots, recording four birdies en route to a four-under-par round of 68 to finish two shots clear of Martin Dewhurst.

Dewhurst, who was making his seasonal debut after spending the summer abroad coaching, recorded three birdies in his two-under-par round of 70.

That left him two shots ahead of defending champion Cirencester’s Ed Goodwin who was one clear of Mendip Spring’s George Ryall and Brickhampton Court duo Ross Langdon and Luke Gaskins.

In finishing tied-fourth, Langdon took advantage of Order of Merit leader Lee Corfield’s absence by reducing the gap between them to 13 points.
