2014 will be a massive year for the Wildernesse Golf Club and, in particular, its PGA Head Professional David Green.

Besides dealing with all the usual responsibilities of a club professional, this year Green will also be combining captaincy of The PGA in Kent with a star role in Callaway’s advertising campaign and two major events at the historic club.

Located in Seal near Sevenoaks in Kent, Wildernesse was one of the earliest courses to be built in Kent. Formed in 1890 by its first patron, Lord Hillingdon, its fine tight inland and largely unchanged course has hosted major national and county events.

A PGA Professional for over 18 years, Green joined Wildernesse as its PGA Head Professional in late 2011. He was elected captain of The PGA in Kent for 2014 – 2015, and will be involved in some twenty pro-am and professional events. A Callaway staff player, Green has also been chosen to appear in Callaway’s Sky Sports advertising campaign throughout summer.

2014 will be a busy and challenging year for Green and Wildernesse but it’s one he’s relishing, “We’re all really looking forward to it,” he explains, “and we have an excellent team at Wildernesse. From the PGA Professionals to the green keepers and the clubhouse staff, all of us are dedicated to ensuring each event is an exceptional experience for everyone who comes here.”

Throughout the 2014 season Green and Wildernesse will play host to a raft of Men’s, Ladies’, Seniors’ and Juniors’ tournaments, but two events, one brand new and one steeped in local and national history, deserve special mention.

The first is the Wildernesse PGA South Order of Merit Tournament in May, sponsored by Virgin Atlantic Little Red.The opening Pro-Am on Sunday 18th will see 160 members, guests and PGA Professionals competing in teams for some major prizes. The main event is the stroke play tournament (19th-20th) in which 120 professionals will be competing as part of the series for the regional champion’s crown.

2014 also marks 100 years since the beginning of The Great War and 70 years since the end of World War II. So the second event to highlight is Wildernesse’s historic Battle of Britain Stableford on the 23rd and 27th September, commemorating Flight Lieutenant Harold Schwind, a Battle of Britain hero shot down in his Hurricane as his patrol intercepted enemy bombers on the 27th of September 1940, crash landing behind Wildernesse’s 16th green.

The silverware for the Battle of Britain Trophy also commemorates Schwind’s memory in a unique way, having been beautifully and uniquely hand crafted from one of the pistons of the crashed Hurricane.

Looking beyond to 2015, the R&A’s regional Open qualifying events return to Wildernesse in which PGA professionals and scratch amateur’s battle for those rare entries into the Open Championship, held at the most famous and historic golf course in the world, St Andrew’s in Fife, Scotland.
