Final four make it through to 3TS final

The line-up for the final of the PGA-organised 3TS competition was confirmed at Slieve Russell, as the final four clubs qualified for the K Club showpiece.

Mount Wolseley sneaked ahead to claim victory from the host club. The two teams shared the top of the leaderboard on 91 points at the end of the day but the visitors took first place on countback over the last six holes, 30 points to 27.

The Hermitage was clear third and Portumna and Coollattin fought it out for the last qualifying spot. They both returned 86 points with the Galway side best on the back nine, 46 to 41.

Professional Ted Higgins led the Mount Wolseley table toppers and was joined in the team by Gerry Connolly (20), Padráig Daly (14) and Rita Bryan (33). Slieve Russell pro Gordon Smyth (above), club captain Brian Cunningham (14), Thomas Cullen (13) and Brid Sullivan (20) combined to take the host team into second place.

Just a single point behind, at 90, was The Hermitage with Simon Byrne, who is the club’s head professional, club captain Peter Ennis (13), Alan Dunning (5) and Mary Duane (5) the team members.

Odd team out, in fourth and last qualifying place, was Portumna with the County Galway club side made up of amateur players Michael Kennedy (11), Brid Kelly (22), Martin Carity (26) and Pauline McAvoy (25).

The national final of the 3TS competition will be staged on Monday 14 October with 11 teams battling it out for the title.
