Multi-national trio set scorching pace in the sunshine

Scott Drummond, James Frazer and Luke Derrick matched the scorching temperature with some red-hot golf to lead the Marstons PGA West Region Championships at the end of the first round.

The three posted five-under-par rounds of 66 to set the pace in pursuit of victory in the region’s first Order of Merit event in the truncated season and the £1,600 first prize.

And they did so in fine style at Mendip Spring Golf Club, recording 16 birdies and just one bogey between them

Scotland’s Drummond (above) and Frazer of Wales, who is attached to Machynys Peninsula Golf and Club, were both bogey-free while Derrick, an Englishman who represents nearby Clevedon Golf Club, was responsible for the solitary blip.

That came at the par-five seventh and left him on one-under, two shots adrift of his co-leaders at the turn.

He made amends in emphatic fashion on the back nine, however, recording a birdie at 12 and three in succession from 15 to 17.

In addition to co-leading the tournament, Frazer and Derrick are doing likewise in the contest to finish as the highest placed PGA Assistant.

As for the competition to win the Senior crown, a keenly fought battle looks in store in the second round.

Two-time European Tour winner, Trevose Golf and Country Club’s Andrew Sherborne lies joint fourth on three-under with Weston Super Mare Golf Club’s Daniel Toogood to lead that contest.

Wessex Golf Centre’s Michael Watson, who is in his first season as a Senior, is a shot further back level with Enmore Park’s David Dixon and Bradley Scott of Tiverton Golf Club.

And Morlais Castle’s Sion Bebb, who is in his second season as a Senior, is on one-under along with defending champion Toby Hunt of St Mellons Golf Club.

Meanwhile, Georgia Lewis of the Vale Resort leads the Women’s competition on three-over, four shots clear of the defending champion, the home club’s Katie Rule.
