The PGA in Ireland will make a welcome return to the world famous K Club on May 26th and 27th.

The iconic Ryder Cup venue is set to host a two-day pro-am with a prize pot of €33,000 – the biggest on the Irish circuit this year - on offer for the professionals.

Speaking in advance of the event Sharon Smurfit, director of membership at The K Club said: “We are really looking forward to hosting this exciting tournament and are pleased to support Irish Golf through the PGA in Ireland.”

The amateur competitors will be battling it out for overall and daily awards with some fantastic prizes courtesy of Newbridge Silverware on offer. The event has understandably attracted a lot of interest and a superb field has been assembled including former Ryder Cup star Eamonn Darcy, who famously holed the winning putt for Europe at Muirfield Village in 1987.

In total, 42 teams will play a round on both the Smurfit Course and the Palmer Ryder Cup Course, venue for the 2006 show piece against the USA, which was won by Europe.

Michael McCumiskey, secretary of The PGA in Ireland said: “We are delighted to be associated with the K Club Pro-Am. The venue not only hosted the 2006 Ryder Cup, but also the Smurfit PGA Irish Championship in 1992 and 1993, all under the support and patronage of Dr Michael Smurfit who since 2008 has been Honorary President of The PGA in Ireland.”

The owner of The K Club, Dr. MichaeI Smurfit, continues to be one of the most ardent and loyal supporters of The PGA in Ireland. The Smurfit Company sponsored the PGA Irish Championship from 1990 at Woodrook GC right through to 2003 at Adare Resort. During that time, the tournament was won by some of Ireland's most famous golfers including Darren Clarke, Eamonn Darcy, Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley, Des Smyth and Philip Walton.
