Mendip’s Kevin Pitts (above right) and Farrington Park teaching pro Terry Williams  (left) teamed up to take victory in the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Pairs Championships.

They navigated the tricky Channel Course at Burnham and Berrow in a score of eight-under-par 62.

This brought a two-shot margin over the Mendip Spring duo of John Blackburn and Will Hobbs, a former Farrington junior who is now a first year trainee.

The format saw the opening nine holes played in a scramble format before changing to betterball scoring for the second circuit around the nine-hole lay-out.

The winners scrambled around in just 29 strokes making six birdies, including four in succession from the fourth. Pitts birdied the tenth and a succession of pars preceded two final birdies by Williams.

The Mendip Spring duo also excelled in the scramble by claiming five birdies in six holes from the fourth to turn in 30.

A double bogey six at the difficult 11th dented their chances but Hobbs picked up shots at the 13th and 14th before Blackburn, who was making a rare playing appearance, made an eagle at the short par four 15th.

Roy Holland (Long Ashton) and James Jakes (Shirehampton Park) shared third on 65 with previous winners Rod Hibbitt (Cotswold Edge) and Ed Goodwin (Cirencester).

Shane Kaye (Burnham & Berrow) and Graeme Biggs (Burnham Golf Range), another Mendip Spring pro Pat Baker and Paul Barrington (Players Club) plus father-son duo Martin and James Keitch (Taunton Vale) shared fifth on 66.
