Lee Scarbrow recovered well after dropping five shots in his first three holes to share first prize at the Beds and Cambs PGA pro-am.

The John O’Gaunt head professional’s one-over-par round of 73 around Menzies Golf Club at Bar Hill was matched by George Howard of Brampton Park, who was delighted to enjoy his first PGA success.

Joint third with rounds of 74 were Phil Abbott of John O’Gaunt and Suzanne Dickens, who has considerable experience on the Ladies’ European Tour. She is a teaching professional at Thorpe Hall.

Stuart Brown of Orton Meadows, who has been prominent in East Region Order of Merit events in recent years, was fifth with 75.

Very soggy conditions made scoring difficult but Tom Turner, golf operations manager at Menzies, and his staff worked hard to keep the course open. Beds and Cambs PGA hope to return there for their Championship in May.

Dean Saunders (John O’Gaunt) won the team event with amateurs A Foster, P Dobson and P Fisher. They had 82 Stableford points. Scarbrow, C Page, A Woods and M Rhodes were one point behind. Third place went to Dickens, C Judge, M Foreman and B Vacher with 79 points.
