Sharvin battles to clinch top spot at Donegal Pro-Am

01/07/2025

Cormac Sharvin was pleased with how he managed himself in extremely blustery conditions to get over the line and win the Total Splicing Solutions Donegal Pro-Am in Murvagh.

Sharvin carded a superb round of 72 to clinch his second victory in five starts with a four-under total, three shots clear of Michael McGeady in second place.

Starting on the back nine, the Ardglass man didn't have things all. his own way as he bogeyed the par fives 12 and 14 to fall two-over for the day and back into a share of the lead with McGeady who had carded a morning 71.

But Sharvin rallied with birdies on 15 and 18 to take control and a birdie on the par-5 1st saw him pull three clear, and that's how he remained with a bogey on 4 and a birdie on the 8th and his patience was rewarded after an early struggle.

"I shot 72 today it could have been three or four-over to be honest, it was one of those kind of days. I chipped and putted really well I think I only hit three greens on my back nine and played it in one-under so I had to rely on my short game," said the Elm Park pro.

Teeing off two in front of McGeady, Sharvin knew he would have to knuckle down in the 40km/h gusts to keep the Derry man away.

"I saw that McGeady had posted one-under and I knew I was going to have to play well to at least equal that today. There was a lot of cross winds with gusts and I didn't do much well but managed to get it around under par."

This is Sharvin's third win on the region since he returned to golf last year with two of them being two-day events and he admits that the longer tournaments suit him after struggling for patience in some of the Friday 18-hole pro-ams.

"You can only have so much control of your ball flight with these gusts so you have to rely on your patience and your short game and your holing out because you will have a lot of five or six footers.

"My game has felt really good without scoring great, scored better this week. I have struggled with the 18-hole tournaments I get a little impatient whereas I know here I have two days so I can be more patient so that's something I need to work on for the 18-holes."

Sharvin's 72 was an afternoon best matched only by North West's Brian McElhinney who shared third place on level-par alongside Keith Shannon.

Tim Rice and McGeady had the best rounds of the day and Rice's 70 moved him nine places up the leaderboard and into a share of fifth place with Adam Dunmore and Niall Kearney who carded rounds of 73 for a one-over total.

The only other round in red figures came from Galway's David Mortimer who shared eight place with Richie O'Donovan on two-over.
