Bristol Golf Centre’s Giuseppe Licata – otherwise known as Spag - chalked up his sixth Gloucester and Somerset PGA win at Stockwood Vale.

His four-under-par round of 67 was three better than runner-up Paul Deeprose (Halstock Driving Range).

A misty landscape welcomed the players to the course with sharp inclines just outside Bristol. With the lack of sun the temperature was a few degrees lower than many had expected but the Bristol-born Italian’s golf was pretty hot.

His made five birdies and just one blemish when he took three putts at the 13th. On the outward run his strokes were gained at the fourth and seventh as many of the holes were assisted by the light wind. Turning for home he birdied the long par four 11th, the driveable 14th and the 17th. He also collected the birdie sweep.

It was Deeprose’s best finish of the season. He made four birdies but a double bogey seven at the lengthy par five 16th prevented him from breaking 70. Deeprose, who is a PGA qualified rules official, did win the Over 40’s sweep money.

Robin Goodey (Chipping Sodbury) matched par to claim third and record his best finish of the year. He was joined on that mark by amateur and former Stockwood Vale member Ian Brice. Big-hitting Scott Thompson (Bleadon Hill) was fifth on 72.
