Lichfield’s Danny Taylor is targeting a PGA Cup return - so that his children can remember him playing in the event this time.

Taylor made it in to the Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup team that was narrowly defeated by the United States in Georgia in 2007 but his children were too young to fully appreciate their father’s achievement.

Taylor, representing the Robert Rock Academy, is among a field of Midlands PGA professionals who will line up in the regional qualifier for the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship, supported by Peugeot at Little Aston on Friday, May 3.

He will be aiming to qualify through to the £78,000 Glenmuir showpiece final being held on June 11-14 at the De Vere Slaley Hall in Northumberland which will also decide the Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup team to face the US in September at the same venue.

“I would love to play in the PGA Cup again, for club professionals it is second only to the Open Championship,” said Taylor.

“When I was there last time, my youngest daughter was only 10 weeks; the eldest was four, so they don’t remember anything.

“From that point of view it would be nice to take them to the event so they’ll have something to remember.

“It’s a fantastic experience so it’s something I’ll be aiming for.”

While his own game is top notch, Taylor spends much of the week using his coaching skills to good effect at the Robert Rock Academy which is growing all the time - and is encouraging new players of all ages.

“At the moment I’m teaching players from four years old to 88!” he added.

“Nobody can compete with what we’re doing in terms of trying to grow the game, the facilities we have and the experience the professionals can offer.

“It’s a great atmosphere down there and the place is going from strength to strength.”

Cameron Clark (Moor Hall) will also be teeing off at Little Aston after coming 25th and 11th in the last two finals.

Shaun Ball (South Staffs), Ian Lyner (Leicestershire Golf Club), Nick Soto (Northampton Golf Club), Richard Reed (Notts Golf Club), James Stafford (Burton on Trent) and Darren Bartlett (Erewash Valley) are also set to appear at the Birmingham course.
