Two out of two for in-form Martindale

Two out of two for in-form Martindale

19/08/2021

Marie Martindale maintained her recent run of good form at Bowood by winning her second OCEANTEE WPGA Series event in succession.

Having recorded her first victory of the campaign at Ormskirk at the end of July, the PGA pro from Hampstead Golf Club followed up by winning the Women on the Tee-organised Ladies Pro-Am.

The event on the PGA Course at the Wiltshire resort was the second ladies pro-am in the new look OCEANTEE WPGA Series and followed the first at Golf at Goodwood a week ago.

Martindale missed that event because she had been a victim of the ‘pingdemic’ but the enforced absence was not reflected in the way she negotiated the challenging Dave Thomas-designed lay-out.

In posting a two under par round of 73 she was the only player to break par, finishing three shots clear of Maria Tulley and four ahead of Suzanne Dickens and Katie Rule.

Reflecting on her round, she felt she could have improved on that and said: “The scary thing is I had a double bogey on the eighth when I hit the ball into the water.

“And I also left three or four putts out there so it could have been a lot better than two-under.

“Even so, I feel like I’m playing well and my putting has definitely improved. There were no three putts today, which showed in the score.

“Overall my golf was steady. I didn’t really hit any bad shots.  And i used the driver quite a lot which resulted in shorter shots into the green.”

Tulley, meanwhile, continues to lead the Order of Merit but, with two events remaining, her advantage over Keely Chiericato is just 2.75 points. Martindale lies third 5.75 points further back.

Chiericato, who posted a three over par round of 78 to finish tied fifth with Anna Smith, had a measure of consolation insomuch that she led a trio of amateurs from the host club comprising Gemma Slade, Margaret McLauchlan and Sue Minchin to victory in the team event.
