Three of Yorkshire’s best golfers are ready to unite in search of glory at the inaugural SkyCaddie PGA England & Wales Inter-County Championship.

Snainton Golf Centre’s John Wells will line up alongside Adrian Ambler (Low Laithes) and Aran Wainwright (Mid Yorkshire Golf Club) for the north regional qualifier, where they will face teams from Lancashire, Cheshire & North Wales and the North East & North West.

The winners of the regional event, which will be held at Bolton Golf Club on Monday 30 September, will go on to compete in the £10,000 two-day final at The Belfry on 14-15 October, where the format will see the best two scores from three in each of the two rounds counting towards the final score.

Scarborough-based Wells is looking forward to representing his county in The PGA’s newest tournament, and he expects the trio to be among the front-runners in the qualifier.

He said: “We’ve got a really strong county PGA here in Yorkshire, so I think we stand a good chance of doing well.

“I know the other lads very well, I've played against them both quite a lot in regional events.

“I think we’ll make a good team, everything’s looking good ahead of the event and I’m really proud to have been given the chance to represent my county.”

Born in Beverley, East Yorkshire, Wells’ career to date has seen some incredible highs topped, by his own admission, by an appearance in the 2011 PGA Cup.

“It was an absolutely fantastic experience,” he recalled. “Even though we lost it was great to represent the country and to play over in America.

“The other experience that really sticks out for me is The PGAs of Europe International Team Championship in 2010. It was amazing to play in Portugal, and we won which was a really good achievement.”

Wells’ experience will have been evident to those that have watched him this year. He has been firing on all cylinders throughout 2013, recording an impressive 10 pro-am victories and claiming fourth place in The PGA in England (North) Order of Merit.

But he has also enjoyed his time away from the country’s fairways. Wells has been based at Snainton Golf Centre for the last three years, and he has enjoyed the challenge of getting involved with the sales and marketing side of the business.

“Snainton is a fantastic place to work, it is very busy and I’ve really been enjoying my role,” he explained.

“I do a lot of work on things like mail shots and newsletters, it is really interesting to be involved with that aspect.

“While I’m in the role I still get plenty of chances to play. I probably play twice a week, so hopefully that’ll help me in the qualifier.”
