Trentham to host PGA’s flagship event

The PGA is delighted to announce its flagship event – The PGA Professional Championship – will be played at Trentham Golf Club in October.

The 72-hole championship heads to the Staffordshire venue for the first time from October 6-9, 2020.

Widely regarded as one of the must-play courses in the region, Trentham is set on part of the former Duke of Sutherland's Estate, with beautifully wooded areas and lakes.

Driving is a real challenge on any hole and at over 6,600 yards the course will provide a stern test for this year’s PGA Professional Championship field.

Trentham is no stranger to hosting PGA tournaments having hosted the women’s equivalent in both 2018 and 2019. The course has also been used by The R&A for Open Championship Regional Qualifying since 2002 and for England Golf County events.

Una Handley, General Manager at Trentham Golf Club, commented: “When we were asked to host the PGA Professional Championship we were absolutely delighted and jumped at the opportunity.

“We are fortunate to have a top class championship golf course, first rate practice facilities and a beautiful traditional clubhouse. Our team here go above and beyond to make any visitor feel safe, welcome and well looked after, which is especially important during these unprecedented times.

“We are looking forward to welcoming The PGA and this year’s players and while we cannot assure them that every day the sun will shine, we can definitely assure them of a very warm welcome.”

Due to the impact of COVID-19, there will be no qualifying rounds. Instead, the field will be made up of the leading players who have entered from the 2019 and 2020 Regional Order of Merit events, along with players under the original exemptions.

Charles Hine, Head of Tournaments at The PGA, added: “We are thrilled to be taking this year’s PGA Professional Championship to Trentham Golf Club.

“We have been committed to finding a venue for this year’s championship and Trentham’s central location and its rich pedigree in hosting high quality tournaments will make it a popular venue for this year’s field.”
